Express Script is a company that handles prescription drug benefits and claims for health insurers’ clients and employers while Walgreens is the nation’s largest drugstore chain. I was very upset to hear that Walgreens recent negotiations with Express Scripts to renew their contract to continue as part of its pharmacy network were unsuccessful, and the contract expired on December 31st. As a result, Walgreens is no longer part of Express Scripts’ pharmacy provider network. Many patients under an Express Scripts plan have used Walgreens pharmacies for years and have a personal relationship with their Walgreens pharmacist. One step being taken by Walgreens to minimize disruption is to offer a special discount on annual membership for the Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens.
Walgreens offers the "Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens." Though not insurance, it's a good way to save money when filling prescriptions. There are more than 8,000 brand-name and generic medications covered by this program, including diabetic medications and supplies, and pet medicine. Although the program does not have an age limit or require a health exam or prior authorization, certain eligibility requirements must be met. Applicants must live in the United States or Puerto Rico and may not be on any publicly funded health care plan, such as Medicaid, Medicare or TRICARE. The Savings Club is in effect at any Walgreens location at any time. Normal yearly fees for the savings club cost $25 per person or $35 per family. During January, Walgreens offers the program at $5 per individual and $10 per family for eligible customers.
